阿米爾·穆罕默德 AMIR MUHAMMAD
1972 年出生於吉隆坡,擁有閃亮亮的法律學位,卻將之拋諸腦後。2000 年以DV拍攝首部劇情長片《唇對唇》(Lips to Lips),卻因為影片拍得實在太爛,以致其他影像工作者都認為自己應該可以拍出更優秀的電影,於是陳翠梅 (Tan Chui Mui)、李添興 (James Lee)、奧斯曼阿里 (Osman Ali) 等人掀起了馬來西亞電影新浪潮。阿米爾的電影從未上過院線,倒是多次遭到馬來西亞政府禁演,例如以馬共為主軸的《最後的共產黨員》(The Last Communist,2006) 及《村民收音機》(Village People Radio Show,2007)。阿米爾的電影犀利卻不失詼諧地批判大馬政治,魔幻又寫實的影像敘事,常讓觀影者措手不及,包括當時審查《最後的共產黨員》的一眾國會議員們,有者覺得影片不夠暴力、影像敘事太蹩腳而一度陷入兩難。
阿米爾現今除了積極培養年輕一代的影像工作者,也經營獨立出版社 Buku Fixi,出版影評及文學創作,鼓勵吉隆坡都會一代年輕人的閱讀與書寫習慣。
Writer and filmmaker Amir Muhammad is regarded as one of the pioneers of Malaysian New Wave film for his 2000 debut, "Lips to Lips." Muhammad originally trained in Law, but had already established as a niche as a writer for print media. A number of his works, both film and non-fiction writing, have been banned in Malaysia for criticizing the government. He founded an independent publishing house, Buku Fixi.

沿著前人的足跡,探尋歷史殘留的片段,與當地人的閒聊間,被忽略的地理風土與歷史紋路一一重現,曾經收容著革命黨人的雨林,依然留存著那個時代的生命與記憶。導演阿米爾無視禁忌碰觸馬來西亞爭議題材,以馬來西亞共產黨總書記陳平的生平作為引子,探查其青年時期曾經駐留的鄉鎮,重訪馬共在泰國南部的據點。大量訪問當地民眾的生活經驗與馬共成員回憶,穿插諷刺歌曲及諧擬的政治宣傳音樂錄影帶,阿米爾不改一貫的戲謔風格,企圖再書寫從英國殖民、日本佔領到獨立後的馬來西亞政治變遷。
Lelaki Komunis Terakhir (The Last Communist) is a part-musical, part-documentary that traces the life of Chin Peng, the last leader of the banned Communist Party of Malaya (the former name of Malaysia when it was a British colony). The film is a travelogue of the towns that Chin lived and operated in. Interviews with the towns' current residents are juxtaposed against historical narration. Because communism remains a taboo subject in Malaysia, the film is currently banned there.

1987 年 10 月,名叫亞當的士兵手持M16步槍在吉隆坡華人地區掃射,導致一名馬來人、兩名華人死亡,震撼當時的大馬社會。導演阿米爾在 16 年後拿著DV攝影機,到街頭上採訪市民對這場動亂的記憶,以及他們對於政治、社會、種族、宗教議題的意見,在虛構和現實交雜間,構築了鮮活生猛的吉隆坡庶民群像。馬來西亞首部入圍日舞影展的影片,透過回顧影響了往後數十年大馬政治局勢的關鍵一年,阿米爾從一觸即發的巫華衝突、政治大逮捕的「茅草行動」、箝制媒體等事件、進一步碰觸到 1969 年的「513 事件」的禁忌議題,敘事幽默輕快,卻直指馬來西亞的政治社會核心。
This documentary/fiction hybrid looks at Malaysian life through the lens of a recent historical event. On October 18, 1987, a soldier ran amok, stealing an M-16 and embarking on a shooting spree in Kuala Lumpur's Chow Kit district, killing one and injuring several. The incident triggered panic across a city already tense from rumors of impending race riots. It also spawned a government crackdown, prompting Malaysians to question major aspects of their society and political system.

在經過數十年的游擊戰後,馬來西亞共產黨走出泰國南部的叢林,許多革命黨人因此重回馬來西亞的故鄉,但一部分的人仍選擇定居在他們戰鬥了大半輩子的雨林,他們的後代將成為泰國公民,曾經傾付生命的獨立與共產理想,在雞鳴和雨林的空景裡都已成記憶。導演阿米爾再次馬共為題材,聚焦以馬來穆斯林人為主要成員的馬共「第十軍團」,阿米爾以更抽象凝鍊的影像,為馬來共產黨人的生命作傳,而以莎士比亞劇本為靈感的虛構廣播劇,是他們與母國複雜情結的隱喻。
This film is a portrait of village life in Southern Thailand, home to many retired Malay-Muslim members of the Communist Party of Malaya, who fled from their native Malaysia after a sustained government-led purge following World War II that lasted into the 1980s. Recollections of this decades-long guerrilla war are interspersed with a Thai radio soap opera. The film was deemed "not suitable for public filming" by the Malaysian Film Censorship Board and remains banned today.

馬來西亞 13 個州州屬中,給人保守、神秘印象的東海岸州屬「登嘉樓」是導演阿米爾尚未踏足的地方。2015 年 12 月,他拿起攝影機造訪這塊土地,以影像遊記的方式,完成一場「海城漫遊」。電影中,他引用馬來裔大文豪文西阿都拉在1838 年對登嘉樓居民、王室、生活態度等提出的犀利觀察,對照現今登嘉樓庶民的談話及生活氛圍——大文豪百年前的視角,與當下的登嘉樓兩相碰撞後,將產生什麼樣的火花?導演用時而唯美時而魔幻的鏡頭語言,搭配別具深意的聲音設計,打算帶你一同潛入秘境。
Terengganu was the only state of the thirteen states of Malaysia that director Amir Muhammad had never been to. So he decided to visit for the first time in December 2015, accompanied by locally-raised colleague Badrul Hisham Ismail. This video travelogue is interspersed with quotes from a 1838 book on the area by Munshi Abdullah (often referred to as the father of Malay journalism), which serve to frame interviews with several local men, who talk about their culture, faith, everyday worries, and the privileges of being a man.

來自馬來西亞雪蘭莪州加影,現為影像工作者,曾拍攝《裁縫師》(The Tailor of Pertama,2013)、《記一具人體模型》(A Tale of a Mannequin,2014)、《與鄧迪對話》(Dialog Dengan Dendi,2015)等,作品曾於馬來西亞自由電影節、泰國短片與錄像藝術節及馬來西亞短片節中放映。
Born in Selangor, Malaysia, cinematographer Badrul Hisham Ismail has had his work shown at the Malaysia Freedom Film Festival and the Thai Short Film and Video Festival. His past works include "The Tailor of Perama" (2013) and "Dialog Dengan Dendi" (2015).
