呂赫若原名呂石堆，出生於台中潭子一個小地主家庭。他的小說題材主要集中在台灣農村生活與家族故事，文筆鋒利具批判性，本質卻淳厚熱情，被譽為「台灣第一才子」。呂赫若曾在東京與台北都市生活，接受現代化教育，卻對現代化運動始終抱持著反思與抗拒。呂赫若初登台灣文壇時正是日本殖民者改造台灣社會的高峰，他透過文學，表達社會轉型期文人的焦慮。當時的作品<牛車>、<財子壽>、<鄰居>、<月夜>以鄉土想象，描寫現代化下被犧牲的農民、處於弱勢的女性、以及被壓抑的台灣知識份子。其批判精神，亦延續至戰後國民政府統治下的台灣社會……

 

Author and social critic Lu Ho-jo wrote about life in rural Taiwan in the early 20th century. At age 23, he had already been celebrated as a literary genius during the Japanese occupation. When the Chinese Nationalists took control of Taiwan in 1947, Lu wasted no time in voicing his opposition to their rule. He disappeared in 1951 under mysterious circumstances; according to rumors, he died of a viper bite while hiding in a cave. In this documentary, director Lai Fong-chi and Lu's second eldest son, Lu Fang-hsiung, revisit Lu's life.

賴豐奇 Lai Fong-chi

 

畢業於舊金山藝術學院電影研究所，短片作品《蜉蝣》、《浮萍》先後榮獲第15、16屆金穗獎，並受馬德里 ARCO 實驗電影展邀請。紀錄片《化妝師》入圍第 30 屆金馬獎最佳紀錄片、日本山形紀錄片影展、澳洲墨爾本影展。2000 年作品《呂赫若：冷峻的人道關懷者》，親訪呂赫若次子呂芳雄先生，實地走訪呂赫若求學、教書、赴日學習、參加台共活動等重要事件場景，抽絲剝繭解開呂赫若迷一般的人生。影片同年獲金鐘獎最佳紀錄片、金鹿獎最佳導演獎。

 

Taiwanese director Lai Fong-Chi (b. 1959) studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. He experimental works have been screened at festivals in Taiwan and Japan, and his past documentaries, "Make-Up Artist" and "Theater Troupe," have received Golden Horse nominations.
