柬埔寨紀錄片導演、編劇，1964 年出生於金邊，1975 年赤柬當權期間，與家人被迫下鄉加入集體勞動，後輾轉逃往法國，在法國高級電影研究學院完成學位。代表作《S-21：紅色高棉殺人機器》（2003）重現內戰金邊集中營 S-21，獲法國最高榮譽新聞獎 Albert Londres Prize。其他作品亦重現赤柬時期與家族記憶：2013 年《消失的映像》、2016 年《流放歲月》等。2006 年後以「波法娜」之名成立柬埔寨影像紀錄收藏中心，收集、修復戰後影像紀錄，栽培後起人才，彌補戰爭期間所造成的人文藝術與知識斷代。
Born in Phnom Penh, 1964, Rithy Panh is one of Cambodia's most acclaimed documentary filmmakers. After his family was killed by the Khmer Rouge government, he fled in 1979 and eventually arrived in Paris, France, as an orphan refugee. He went on to study at the French cinema school La Fémis. His films include "S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine (2003)" about the infamous torture prison of the Khmer Rouge, and "The Missing Picture" (2013), which became the first Cambodian film nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

金邊吐斯廉屠殺博物館（S21）內陳列的無數犧牲者黑白照裡，有一張秀麗的女孩照片。年僅 25 歲的波法娜，1977 年被赤柬處死。她唯一犯下的罪，則是拒絕放棄對丈夫的愛‧‧‧‧‧‧。
本片由柬埔寨與法國共同製作，採半紀錄、半劇情片方式回顧「赤柬時期」（1976-1979）。以花為名的女孩波法娜，為了躲避越南在家鄉投下的炸彈到了金邊，遇上一生的摯愛西塔（ Sitha）。婚後兩人因為赤柬再度分離，西塔加入赤柬軍隊，波法娜加入勞動集中營。波法娜死前的五個月，秘密寫下上千封的告白書，揭露赤柬政權如何處死她的父親、戰爭期間顛沛流離的生活以及當時禁忌的愛情故事。赤柬時期的專制肅清與屠殺，在波法娜的文字裡一一呈現，為紅色高棉歷史做了完整的回顧與脈絡整理。
"Bophana: A Cambodian Tragedy" reconstructs the relationship of Hout Bophana and her husband Ly Sitha. The film, which originally aired on French television, is based upon documentation of forced confessions made during the Khmer Rouge era in Cambodia, and which were recovered during the 1980s. Bophana is 25 when she is executed by the Khmer Rouge. Her body is thrown into the mass grave of Choeung Ek on March 18, 1977. On the same day, Sitha, a former Buddhist monk turned Khmer Rouge cadre, is also killed. During the five months of torture before her death, she writes thousands of pages of confessions, telling the story of her tragic life and her forbidden love for her husband.
