開幕場，以低吟、實驗、當代沖繩童謠揭開序幕，進入《沖繩列島》的黑白歷史。
童謠是沖繩人的日常記憶，歌謠的根，來自底層生活，保有庶民的寫實與趣味性，樂類的混種，形式的多元，刻印了沖繩數百年來的歷史流變。開幕場邀請沖繩獨立樂人新桓睦美演出，從她多元、另類的沖繩音樂實踐，連結至東陽一導演1969年的《沖繩列島》，聆聽／觀看今日的沖繩音像與路徑，重讀當代的「沖繩札記」。
To open the New Narratives Film Festival in 2016, we start with a music performance, which will be followed by a screening of a historically important documentary film on Okinawa. Okinawa is a place that embraces both the new and the traditional, and its residents proudly maintain a distinct identity, given their islands history as an independent kingdom that eventually gave way to rule by the Japanese, and for a time, the Americans. We have invited Okinawan musician Aragaki Mutsumi to launch the festival, as her music captures the heart and soul of her home island today.

畢業自大阪大學，專攻非洲文化與語言研究。2003年以沖繩傳統民謠歌手出道，發行第一張個人專輯，後逐漸轉向另類的沖繩音樂實踐，師承沖繩傳統大師與日本知名爵士演唱家，將爵士樂、放克、非洲節拍、氛圍音樂與沖繩民謠融會貫通，轉化為自身獨特的當代詮釋。她具穿透力，能量飽滿的迷幻嗓音，高度實驗性的創作曲風，迅速獲得世界樂壇矚目。2015年，原創曲入選當年Womex沖繩音樂選輯；目前以獨立樂手身份與國際樂人展開合作計劃。
Aragaki Mutsumi is a songwriter, vocalist and sanshin player from Okinawa. A graduate of Osaka University, she majored in African studies and Swahili, and released her first CD as a folk artist in 2003. In addition to traditional Okinawan music, Aragaki studied jazz vocals and has recently incorporated that element, along with other contemporary sounds such as funk and Afro-beat, into her own music. Her soulful, sophisticated sound has earned her high regard internationally: In 2015, her music was selected for an Okinawan music sampler distributed at WOMEX2015 and has been featured at events such as South by Southwest.
