After Spring, the Tamaki Family...

Japan | 96 min

The Tamakis are descendants of Taiwanese immigrants who left home during World War II and re-settled on Japan's Yaeyama Islands, which are part of Okinawa Prefecture. This documentary follows 70-year-old "Grandma Tamaki" on a precious return visit to Taiwan to reunite with her family.

She is accompanied by her grandson, Shingo, who grew up immersed in Japanese culture and has a Filipino step-mother. He ponders his own identity in light of his Taiwanese, Japanese and Filipino ties, and grapples with the complicated emotions of visiting an unfamiliar "homeland." The film was nominated for Best Documentary at the 2016 Taipei Film Festival.
