Mogloia/Iran/France

Born into a family of livestock farmers in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, Urna Chahar-Tugchi is one Asia’s most outstanding vocalists and an active performer on the world music stage. Urna has always remained true to her nomadic roots, having lived and performed in a diversity of places, from China to Cairo, Egypt and the idyllic countryside of Germany. Now based and well-established in Europe, Urna’s soaring voice has earned her acclaim from critics, and her accolades include Germany’s RUTH prize for best international artist.

The ground-shaking intensity and power of Urna’s singing evokes the immense grasslands of Mongolia, but it also transcends language and culture. Urna’s versatility as a vocalist has brought her in contact with many international musicians, bringing her music to an otherworldly sphere that bypasses all secular and single-minded musical ideas.

Her most recent recording, “Amilal (Life)”, records the traces and tracks of her life of migration after having left the grasslands of Mongolia. It depicts her gaze into the new worlds and people she has encountered, and conveys her yearnings for a peaceful world.  Urna now tours frequently in Europe with highly acclaimed zarb masters Djamchid Chemirani and Keyvan Chemirani, as well the prominent Hungarian violinist Zoltan Lantos and Jerzy Bawol, the accordion player of the renowned famous klezmer band, Kroke.

Inka Mbing + Atayal Children
Atayal, Taiwan

Inka Mbing, one of Taiwan's most powerful indigenous voices, was born in 1954 in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. A member of the Tayal ethnic group, one of Taiwan's major aboriginal tribes, she was raised largely by her grandmother, and like many aboriginal youth, economic necessity forced her to leave her home village and move to the city to make a living.

The major earthquake that struck Taiwan on September 21, 1999 hit many Tayal mountain communities especially hard, and Inka Mbing became deeply involved in the rebuilding effort. In the wake of the disaster, she and a group of artists formed the musical collective Feiyu Yunbao (Flying Fish Cloud Leopard), which recorded a live album released in 2000, which raised funds for reconstruction of aboriginal communities devastated by the earthquake.

In her years with Feiyu Yunbao and in the time since the group's breakup, Inka Mbing began to move onto bigger stages, performing at a number of world music festivals. She won a prize at the 2002 Uzbekistan World Music Festival, and in 2006 she was one of the performers in the side shows accompanying WOMEX. She also gained recognition in Taiwan in 2004, winning the Culture Disseminator award, and winning second prize in the 2007 Taiwan Original Music Awards for her song "Call of the Mountain". She also performed at Taiwan's Migration Music Festival, a world music festival organized by Trees, Music and Art. In 2008, she released a solo album entitled “Ga-ga,” which contained a mix of original compositions and adaptations of traditional songs.

In recent years, Inka Mbing has spent a great deal of time and effort learning from the elders of her people. Her long running goal: to gain a better understanding of the Tayal language, culture and philosophy of life. Over the years, she has collected many traditional Tayal folk songs from the Taoyuan and Hsinchu area, hoping to help preserve these songs for posterity. "Ancient Teachings of the Tayal" was the first of many such songs she has performed. She makes use of traditional songs in different ways, sometimes rearranging them, sometimes singing her own lyrics over traditional melodies, and sometimes using traditional lyrics with original melodies. She has even gone against cultural taboos among the Tayal, singing songs traditionally sung by men only. As for her lyrics, she sings about topics related to life in the traditional mountain communities of the Tayal, particularly from the perspectives of Tayal women.

Keyvan Chemirani is one of the sons of the Iranian percussionist Djamchid Chemirani, one of the world’s foremost masters of the zarb. He was studying for a masters degree in mathematics until 1988, when he launched an international career as a soloist and accompanist. With the Chemirani Trio, Keyvan has branched out, both individually and as part of the  group,  performing and recording with folk and classical musicians from around the world.

As a percussionist, Keyvan is highly proficient in other instruments, including the Udu, an earthenware jar used in the East and in Africa, as well as the Bendir and the Riqq, two Mediteranean percussion instruments.

Marja Helena Fjellheim Mortensson is a young and talented Sami artist with major accomplishments to her name. Having just completed her high school studies specialising in music, Marja has received Hedmark County’s cultural award and has performed for the Norwegian king, the Sami parliament and at the 2014 Riddu Riddu Festival.

Marja started writing songs in high school, and her music is about closeness to nature and issues important to her indigenous heritage, such as the fight for her community’s right to continue reindeer herding and to preserve the Sami language. ‘I write songs about the challenges that are in the reindeer herding, sometimes to calm myself through music,’ says the open hearted musician. Despite her young age, she holds extensive experience in reindeer herding. Riddu Riddu Festival leader Karoline S. T.  Trollvik attests to her talent. "She plays and joiks so beautifully that you are dragged into the music."  (Riddu Riddu)
